The “Gelida Manina” Gently Warmed
The Frankfurt Opera Revives Giacomo Puccini’s “La Bohème” for the Fifth Time

"Of course, the front rank was occupied by Joseph Calleja as Rodolfo and Tatiana Lisnic as Mimí. He had already caused a furor in the role three years ago, and has meanwhile made an international career, a tenor almost as bright as the young Pavarotti, hardly less supple and versatile his sensitivities, but primarily not without warmth. Tatiana Lisnic is no callow child, but rather a passionate young woman. She doesn’t exaggerate her expressiveness, finding the way to beautiful, intensive lyricism."

Triumph of the Tenor
Back on the Frankfurt Opera Schedule: Puccini’s “La Bohème”

"Calleja was certainly the uncrowned king of the evening, vocally and dramatically present from the first note on, and dynamically flexible all the way to pianissimo yet never ostentatiously flaunting the power of his brightly timbred voice. The effortlessness all the way to his unforced top notes opens extraordinary future prospects."
