Role DÉbuts in Verdi's "La Traviata" at the State Opera
On Saturday, Jules Massenet's "Manon" starring Anna Netrebko and Roberto Alagna was premièred. Anyone who thinks this might have prompted the Vienna State Opera to neglect the repertoire would be dead wrong. On the contrary: in Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata", the House on the Ring proved that, even apart from the major events, good opera evenings are nevertheless possible. That high quality is also attributable to Joseph Calleja, making his role début in a performance that revealed him in superb vocal form and giving a flawless theatrical reading of Alfredo. A magnificent achievement, which earned him the cheers of the audience.
