REVIEWS: LA TRAVIATA
3 performances of Verdi's opera La Traviata at the Vienna State Opera. The role was Alfredo.
International Herald Tribune
Verdi classic nearly perfect in voice, staging, drama
Good operas, like fine wines, can improve with age. And so it is with the Vienna State opera staging of Verdi's "La Traviata." [...] Tenor Joseph Calleja was the undisputed star of the evening as [Alfredo] Germont [...] Calleja's voice was like burnished velvet that lost nothing of its strength even at the opera's most intimate moments, when pianissimo — not power — was called for. His pitch was perfect, his diction dead on. [...] Calleja was at his finest vocally and dramatically in "Un di felice," and "De' miei bollenti spiriti" — both arias of joy and love. And both principals shone in their duets.

A real treasure was Joseph Calleja as Alfredo. He sings so beautifully and with so much feeling, the perfect sound for this role. He is not the greatest person-interpretator, but he is not insincere.
